Radu Popovici from the University of Twente advises the Dutch national rail company and ProRail to equip their trains with sensors that measure the slipperiness of the tracks. Such measures can reduce the number of delays and make the tracks safer, especially in the autumn. On 19 February, the Faculty of Engineering Technology awarded Popovici a PhD for his research into friction on slippery tracks.

A new ‘fertility chip’, developed by researchers at the University of Twente’s MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology, can accurately count spermatozoa in sperm. This is an important step towards the development of a compact device for reliable ‘pre-scanning’ of male fertility. The researchers are publishing the invention of the chip in the scientific journal Lab on a Chip.

According to Job van Palen, health care providers should take advantage of new research methodologies such as computerized adaptive testing. Using these methods, specialists would be better able to assess individual patients’ risk profiles. ‘Personalized management’ would also be facilitated. Job van der Palen spoke on these topics on 11 February 2010 during his inauguration as Professor of the endowed chair in Evaluation and Assessment in Health Research at the University of Twente. He is a clinical epidemiologist at the Twente Medical Spectrum (MST).

Prof. Wouter van Joolingen gave his inaugural speech on 4 February at the University of Twente. Engaging in modelling not only helps pupils improve their powers of abstract thought, but it also teaches them more about the subject of their models.

Last year Dr Petra de Weerd-Nederhof was appointed to the post of Professor of Organization of Innovation. Her research focuses on successful ways for businesses to innovate. For a long time the guiding principle in the academy was that there was but one best practice, and that this was the gold standard that we should strive for. According to De Weerd-Nederhof, however, things are not quite so simple. “There is no such thing as one single best practice. You need to make strategic choices and view innovation as a process.” De Weerd-Nederhof will give her inaugural speech on 28 January at the Faculty of Management and Governance of the University of Twente.

Researchers from the University of Twente’s MIRA research institute, UMC St Radboud and various other institutions have developed a highly detailed computer model of the musculoskeletal system of the lower half of the human body. Surgeons can use this model to enhance their preparations for surgery, and even to “practice” these procedures in advance, using Virtual Reality. The model can be personalized for individual patients. The researchers recently received a European grant of 3 million euros for the development work.

Though the risk of a flood in the Netherlands is not imminent, the Dutch public is not sufficiently prepared should one occur. This is the finding of a study carried out by the behavioural scientist Teun Terpstra. ‘The government places too much emphasis on reassuring people that we’re safe rather than informing the public of the possible consequences of a flood so we know what to do if it all goes wrong.' Terpstra will be awarded his PhD by the Faculty of Behavioural Sciences of the University of Twente on 15 January.

In his role as representative of an international consortium of universities and major companies, he rounded off 2009 in style by winning a hard-fought contest for a major subsidy aimed at making Europe’s ICT sector far more competitive. “It was nail-biting stuff,” he reveals. “In Budapest we had to present our proposal to a kind of jury. They were there to assess the ideas from all of the competitors. The result was announced that very same evening: our group emerged as the winner. It was like the final of Pop Idol.”

How do individual cells or proteins react to changing pH levels? Researchers at the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology at the University of Twente have developed a technique for ‘gently’ adjusting pH: in other words, without damaging biomolecules. This should soon allow them to measure the activity of a single enzyme as a function of pH. The researchers will publish their findings in the journal Lab on a Chip, which will devote a cover story to their research in the December 21st issue.

Of course, Professor Drukker generally looks at the past, but on this occasion he will be making an exception and consider the future. The fundamental ‘form follows function’ principle, for example, is becoming obsolete, and is making way for ‘interface design’.

In addition to the need to improve quality (and following the 2002 fire in Cubicus), the new buildings are required for the growth in student numbers. As Route ’14 indicates, the University of Twente aims to expand its teaching capacity to 10,000 students, which in turn means an increase in the number of employees and of course has consequences for the university’s buildings.
