Scientists unlock the migration mystery of the golden takin

The golden takin is a large plant-eating mammal that lives in the mountains of China. Each season it migrates up or down the mountain. Until recently the reason behind its complex seasonal migration pattern was a mystery. But researchers Tie-Jun Wang and Andrew Skidmore of the University of Twente’s Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation believe they have at last cracked the secret. The golden takin does not simply follow sources of readily available food, like other herbivores. It deliberately seeks out sunlight during the cold winter months. The researchers’ findings recently made the cover of the prestigious Journal of Mammalogy.

Strategic decision-making in a declining sector

The importance of the industrial sector as a driving force behind economic growth and employment in the Netherlands is steadily shrinking. The textile industry - as one of the larger branches within the sector - has been a forerunner in this process of de-industrialization. Only a handful of textile companies have won this battle for survival. These are the conclusions reached by H.J. Hesselink in his dissertation Strategic decision-making in a declining sector, which he defended on Wednesday, 27 January 2010 at the Faculty of Management and Governance at the University of Twente.

Pinprick predicts lifetime of gas pipes

The first plastic gas pipes in the Netherlands were made of hard PVC and fitted from the sixties up to the mid-seventies. Their lifetime was originally estimated to be 50 years. Now, 50 years on, their lifetime is proving to be longer. However, there is no method for determining the residual lifetime of these pipes simply and cheaply. To this end, Roy Visser of the University of Twente has developed a measuring technique which gas grid operators can use to determine their replacement policy. Visser received his PhD from the Faculty of Engineering Technology on 22 January 2010.

This suit is intended to help people with spinal injuries, for example, to walk again. The legs of the robotic suit receive signals from the patient’s brain, which are relayed by a specially developed helmet. A prototype suit should be ready in three years’ time.

Science pupils in their 6th year at Dutch secondary schools have chalked up impressive scores on an international maths and physics test at pre-university level. The Dutch pupils performed particularly well in physics. Yet compared to other countries, relatively few secondary school pupils in the Netherlands take maths and physics at the highest level. These are the results of TIMSS Advanced 2008, an international study into the educational level of pupils in the final year of secondary school. The results were published today by TIMSS and the PIRLS International Study Center of Boston College.

Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) are waste water treatment plants in which the separation of active sludge and purified water takes place by means of membrane filtration. A big problem with MBRs is that the membranes in question become fouled. Perry van der Marel of the University of Twente and Wetsus have developed a measuring method and used it to improve MBRs. This will reduce the costs of operating MBRs and raise water yields. Van der Marel obtained his doctorate at the University of Twente’s faculty of Science and Technology on 18 November 2009.

The energy generated in places where fresh water and salt water meet is known as blue energy. This is a relatively new but highly promising renewable energy source. Piotr Długołęcki of the University of Twente and the Wetsus centre of excellence for sustainable water technology has further refined the method that is most commonly used to generate blue energy in the Netherlands. This method produces three to four times as much energy as previous processes.
The main purpose of PARDEM (PAR = Particles/DEM = Discrete Element Method) is to improve large-scale industrial designs and processes. For this PARDEM will provide and develop the underlying science. A multi-scale approach will relate particle and contact characteristics to predictions of industrial processes and make it possible to assess and establish the validity of DEM through a combination of fundamental theory, simulations calibration tests and validation experiments. The PARDEM project will also provide high quality training to a group of young researchers, contributing to the development of a new generation of multidisciplinary researchers able to work within the newly emerging supra-disciplinary field of the Discrete Element Method (DEM) for computational simulations of granular processes.

As part of his research, he followed twelve teams of teachers in two schools which had been given the task of developing a new teaching programme. The findings of the research suggest that it is beneficial to involve teachers in designing a new teaching programme. Teachers also need a range of support during this process.
Student intakes increase

"Universities are unable to handle the increased intake of new students", screamed the headlines after the IB-Group (Informatie Beheer Groep) announced the initial student pre-enrolment figures. A record number of students pre-enrolled for a bachelor’s programmes at Dutch Universities. The Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU) called the increase 'dramatic' and expected financial and organizational problems. But what about the University Twente’s intake? How many new students are we expecting and can we handle it?

The seabed consists of sand waves, that is underwater dunes that can move at speeds of up to 100 meters per year. To ensure that ships do not become trapped in sand waves, the Royal Navy constantly observes the location of sand waves on the North Sea seabed and then updates charts accordingly.

The Stichting Nederlands Schoon (Foundation for a Cleaner Netherlands) was so enthusiastic that the robot is coming on the market.
