How the University of Twente looks after your personal data
The University of Twente is committed to protecting the privacy of its website visitors. This Privacy Statement explains how the collection and use of data at the University of Twente websites works. This statement does not apply to any other online or offline websites that mention the University of Twente but the content of which cannot be influenced directly by the University of Twente. If you access the University of Twente websites you agree with the collection and the use of data as described in this Privacy Statement.
Collecting your personal data
We will ask you for personal details if we need these or
your permission to contact you to perform a service to you, provide
access to a University of Twente event or to send you the
information you asked for, such as information about a University
of Twente degree programmes, courses and training, registration for
an information session, event or competition, requesting
newsletters by email, becoming a member of the alumni platform or
downloading University of Twente content. The following
personal data can be collected: your name, the name of your
previous education, the name of your company or organisation, your
email address, your telephone number, your home address, details
about your previous education, information about your company and
details about educational programmes and preferred locations.
Certain data may be collected about your visit to these
websites, such as the name of the internet provider and the IP
address (Internet Protocol) that you use for accessing the
internet, the date and access time of your visit to these websites,
the pages of the websites that you visit and the internet address
of the referring websites from which you are directly connected to
our websites. This data is used to improve our websites, to analyse
trends and to manage the websites.
We offer you the opportunity to communicate with the editors of
the University of Twente via the feedback form which is available
in the footer of the University of Twente websites so you can
share your experiences, feedback, criticism and suggestions with
the editors. In as far as the University of Twente websites
allow for this, the University of Twente recommends that
you are careful in entering your real email address or other
personal data in, for example, the weblogs or the public forum of
the alumni application in order to prevent that your email address
or other personal data are collected by others and used for any
wrong or harmful purposes.
The Use of Personal Data
The personal details that are collected by these websites
are used to manage the websites, to provide you with information
and to perform services to you or carry out transactions which you
asked for.
To support these applications, the University of
Twente may use personal data to offer you more effective
degree programme information, to improve the websites or to
simplify the use of the websites because you do not then need to
repeatedly key in the same data or adjust the websites to your
preferences or interests. The information collected by the websites
may be combined with data that have been collected for
other University of Twente services allowing us to make your
interaction with University of Twente as consistent and
focused as possible.
Data obtained from your visits to these websites may be combined
with anonymous demographic data for research purposes. This
information can also be used to offer more relevant content. In
certain exclusive parts of the websites, on the condition that you
agree to this, data obtained during your visits to these websites

From time to time the University of Twente hires other

The University of Twente can supply third parties with your

University of Twente to do so, or when the University of
Twente acts in good faith and believes that this is necessary
to: (a) comply with legal ordinances or legal proceedings related
to the University of Twente or the websites, (b) protect
the rights and property of the University of Twente and the related
websites, (c) be able to react in urgent circumstances with respect
to the protection of personal security of University of
Twente students, members of staff, intermediaries and other
persons.
Personal details that have been collected on these websites can
be stored and processed in the Netherlands or in any other country
both within and outside the European Union. By visiting these
websites, you agree with the data transfer outside your country of
origin and/or outside the European Union.
Managing your Personal Data

anyone outside the University of Twente or with separate
organisations and departments of the University of

If the necessity arises, the University of Twente is

services or security issues with respect to the websites, or asking
you to confirm that you have indeed requested information or a
contact moment. For some services that are offered by these
websites, contacting the visitor is an essential aspect of the
service. Because these messages form an essential part of the
service(s) that you have requested yourself, you cannot ask us not
to contact you in that particular case.
Access to your Personal Data
You can look at and change your personal details and
communication preferences that you have given us on these websites
by logging on with your email address and password to the My
University section. You will always be asked for your email address
and password before you can access your personal details.
The Security of your Personal Data
The University of Twente is committed to protecting
the security of all your personal details. In order to ensure that
unauthorized persons do not have access to your details and can not
use this information unlawfully, these websites make use of various
security technologies and procedures. For example, the personal
information provided by you is saved on servers with limited
access. These servers are kept in high-security buildings.
Moreover, private and confidential information is protected when it
is sent via the internet by encryption, such as the SSL-protocol
(Secure Socket Layer).
Cookies
Cookies are used on these websites to guarantee the
integrity of the registration or log on procedure and to make the
websites more personal. A cookie is a small text file that is
placed on your hard disk by a web page server. Cookies cannot be
used to perform an application or to place viruses on your
computer. Cookies are unique for each user and can only be read by
a server in the domain that has sent the cookie to you.
The most important purpose of cookies is to save time and
effort. For example, if you adjust a web page to your personal
preferences or if you are navigating on a website, the chosen
options and preferences are remembered for future use thanks to
cookies. This makes supplying relevant data easier, it makes
navigating faster, and so on. When you visit these websites again
the previously recorded information can be collected by the cookies

Web beacons, also called clear gif technology or action tags,
assist in the delivery of the cookie onto our websites. This
technology is a tool used for generating statistics about the use
of the websites, for example how many visitors have clicked on

newsletter on one of the websites. You can choose whether or not
you accept cookies. Most browsers automatically accept cookies, but
you are usually able to change the settings of the browser in such

Web Beacons
The University of Twente web pages may contain
electronic images that are called web beacons (als referred to
as 'single-pixel gifs'). These enable us to count the number
of visitors that have accessed University of Twente websites
